Need to replace a/c suction hose?

Does anyone have experience with replacing a/c hoses? The suction line on my '06 PT Cruiser GT cracked, and I just picked up the replacement. I know the remaining refrigerant needs to be removed before recharging the system. Do I need to take it to a shop to have this done? Any other advice on the whole procedure would be very helpful.
