Need a new vacuum, have pets, are Dyson worth the price? or just get a Hoover?

my current Eureka vacuum that I had about 8 years is losing suction... I may need to get a new one. I also have carpet & tile floors with 3 pets. My parents own the Dyson Animal and they love it but I just can't bring myself to spend $400 on a vacuum. Any recommendations?
