How is the area around Sacramento State?

I know Sacramento State isn't in the bad part of town, but since I'm not a resident of Sacramento I'd appreciate a bit of info from current Sac State students or Sacramento residents. I'm going to Sac State this fall and I'll be dorming. Is Sac State considered to be located in Midtown? Downtown? I'd love any info on the area. I know there are some good and bad parts of town, but I'll be spending all my time around Sac State or in Elk Grove where my sister lives. Thanks!
